What is Hardscaping?
Many people ask, “What is Hardscaping?” Most people think of a landscape as the beautiful mix of trees, shrubs, and flowers. While this is a crucial aspect of the landscape, there are others. Hardscaping refer to structures throughout the landscape; things like patios, walkways, retaining walls, arbors, and trellises just to name a few. Hardscaping is typically the core of your outdoor living area, providing functional elements like areas for outdoor dining, seating areas, fire pits, and pool decks. They are also aesthetically pleasing, creating“outdoor rooms” in the landscape and helping create your own backyard retreat.
Watch the following video to see the transformation from boring backyard to outdoor living room; including boulder walls, paver patios, fire pit, sandstone steps, outdoor lighting, and planting.
In creating your outdoor room, the first selection typically made is the “flooring”, with options such as interlocking concrete pavers, (sometimes called pavers or paver bricks) natural stone materials such as flagstone (bluestone) or travertine, and molded clay pavers. The flooring is arguably the most important hardscape element, so something that complements your home as well as your lifestyle is a must.
Another hardscape element typically incorporated are retaining walls or sitting walls, which can be built of pre-engineered segmental wall units (wall block) or natural stone. The choice of wall materials often depends what your ultimate goal for the wall is. Walls can be used to retain a hillside, create a sitting wall, or create a level area to install your patio.
